1786 New Jersey (NJ) Half Penny Narrow Shield
PCGS VF30 BN
The 1786 New Jersey copper represents a fascinating piece of early American history, struck during the Confederation period before the U.S. Constitution was even ratified. Minted at the Rahway mint by Thomas Goadsby, Albion Cox, and Walter Mould, these coins were authorized by the New Jersey legislature to address a severe shortage of small change in the region.
This VF30 example certified by PCGS displays perfectly-pleasing chocolate brown surfaces with the distinctive horse head retaining good definition despite moderate circulation. The shield on the reverse shows clear horizontal lines and vertical pales, with the distinctive narrow format clearly visible. The date and legends remain bold and readable, and the surfaces show honest wear consistent with the grade. The coin has developed a natural, even patina that enhances its eye appeal and speaks to its authenticity as a genuine colonial-era artifact. CAC doesn't sticker these issues anymore, but we can be pretty sure this one would earn a green bean if they did!
