1798 Draped Bust Dollar ($1) BB-123

PCGS XF45

The 1798 Draped Bust dollar represents a fascinating chapter in early American numismatics. Struck during a time when the young nation was establishing its monetary system, this date is particularly notable as it falls within the brief first series of silver dollars produced by the United States Mint from 1794-1803. These early dollars were the workhorses of commerce before production was suspended until 1836, making surviving examples increasingly valuable historical artifacts.

This XF45 example certified by PCGS displays an attractive medium gray patina that has developed naturally over its more than 200 years. The surfaces show honest wear consistent with its grade, yet retain impressive detail in Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's wing feathers. The coin is remarkably problem-free for an early dollar that circulated, with no significant marks or damage that would detract from its eye appeal. The original mint luster is still visible in the protected areas, particularly around the stars and lettering.
