1799 Draped Bust Dollar ($1) OGH
PCGS VF25
The 1799 Draped Bust Dollar represents one of the most significant years in early American coinage. With a mintage of only 163,318 pieces, it's considerably scarcer than the 1798 issue. The year 1799 marked the height of the Quasi-War with France, and many of these dollars were exported to Europe and Asia for trade, making surviving examples particularly desirable.
This VF25 example housed in a classic PCGS OGH displays beautifully original surfaces with even, medium-gray toning throughout. The wear is perfectly honest and evenly distributed, with clear detail remaining in Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's wing feathers. The surfaces are remarkably clean for the grade, free of the heavy marks or adjustment lines that often plague early dollars. The eye appeal is exceptional for a mid-grade early dollar.
While VF25 might seem like a modest grade, finding an early dollar with this level of originality and surface quality is increasingly difficult. This coin would make an excellent addition to any early dollar collection or type set.
