1799 Draped Bust Dollar ($1)

PCGS VF35

The 1799 Draped Bust dollar represents a significant year in early American coinage, with a relatively limited mintage of just 423,515 pieces. These early dollars served as the workhorses of commerce during America's formative years, and many were exported or melted for their silver content. The 1799 issue is particularly desirable as it marks the middle year of the Heraldic Eagle reverse design, which was produced for only five years (1798-1803).

This VF35 example shows honest wear consistent with its time in circulation. The surfaces display an attractive medium-gray patina that has developed naturally over the centuries. Despite moderate circulation, the key design elements remain well-defined: Liberty's hair details are still visible with good separation, and the eagle's wing feathers on the reverse show clear definition. The fields are remarkably smooth for the grade, free from the distracting marks or adjustment lines often found on early dollars. The eye appeal is exceptional for a circulated 18th-century dollar, with balanced wear and no significant flaws.
