The 1805/4 Draped Bust half dollar is a fascinating overdate variety that showcases early U.S. Mint production methods. This O-102 variety resulted from mint employees re-punching a 4 with a 5 on the working die to extend its usability during a time when creating new dies was labor-intensive and expensive. With far fewer half dollars surviving from this era compared to later issues, this overdate represents both historical significance and genuine rarity.
This VF25 example, CAC-approved in an NGC holder, displays honest wear consistent with its circulated grade. The surfaces have developed an attractive medium-gray patina with subtle undertones that enhance its originality. Detail remains clear in Liberty's hair and the eagle's features, with the overdate visible under magnification. The eye appeal is excellent for the assigned grade, showing no distracting marks or issues that would detract from its presentation. A wonderful example of this early American rarity that would enhance any serious early half dollar collection.
