1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar (50c)
NGC AU58
The 1831 Capped Bust half dollar is a fascinating transitional issue. While not particularly rare in terms of mintage (with approximately 5.8 million struck), it represents the second-to-last year of the large diameter (32.5mm) version before the series was reduced in size in 1836. These early Bust halves circulated heavily during a time when silver coins were the backbone of American commerce.
This blast-white NGC AU58 example stands at the precipice of uncirculated status, showing just a whisper of wear on the highest points. The surfaces display a pleasing silver-gray patina with gobs of original luster still present. The strike is bold and well-centered, with sharp star details and clear feather definition on the reverse eagle. The fields show minor hairlines consistent with the grade but maintain excellent eye appeal with no distracting marks or issues. A superb representative of this classic early American design that would make an outstanding addition to any type collection.
