1838 Coronet Large Cent (1c)

PCGS MS65+ BN CAC

The 1838 Large Cent is a significant early copper issue from the Coronet Head series, produced during a time of economic upheaval following the Panic of 1837. While not particularly rare in the series, this date represents the second year of Christian Gobrecht's modified design, which would continue with minor changes until 1857.

This exceptional MS65+ Brown example, bearing CAC approval, displays remarkable preservation for a nearly 185-year-old copper coin. The surfaces exhibit rich chocolate-brown patina with subtle undertones of blue and original mint red in the protected areas. The strike is bold, with crisp star points and clear hair details. Under magnification, the fields are remarkably clean for the grade, showing minimal marks or blemishes. The eye appeal is outstanding, with a natural glossy luster that dances across the surfaces when the coin is tilted in the light.

Finding early copper in this elite state of preservation with CAC approval represents a true condition rarity that would enhance even the most advanced collection of large cents or type coins.
