1839/8-C Classic Head Gold Quarter Eagle ($2.50)

PCGS XF40 CAC

The 1839/8-C Classic Head Quarter Eagle is an extraordinary rarity with significant historical importance. Struck at the Charlotte Mint during only its second year of operation, this overdate variety resulted from a punched "8" being corrected with a "9" as the date. With the Charlotte mint producing gold coins in limited quantities, this overdate issue is particularly scarce and represents an important transitional period in American numismatics.

This CAC-approved XF40 example displays a rich, golden patina that speaks to its authenticity and proper preservation. Despite moderate circulation, the coin retains sharp details in Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's feathers. The surfaces show honest wear consistent with the grade, while remaining remarkably free of significant marks or damage. The C mintmark is clear and well-defined, and the overdate feature is visible under magnification. The eye appeal is exceptional for a circulated early gold piece, making this a prize specimen for specialists in either Southern gold or early quarter eagles.
