1849 Moffat Gold Half Eagle ($5)
NGC F12
Ahhhh a '49 Moffat. This coin - despite being only an F12 - absolutely rocks. As one of the most accessible pieces of Pioneer gold, we'll grab every Moffat we can find out there.
This F12 example shows honest wear consistent with its grade, having circulated during the tumultuous Gold Rush era. The surfaces display a warm, honey-gold patina that has developed over its 170+ years. Despite the wear, the distinctive "CALIFORNIA GOLD" legend on the reverse remains clearly visible, as does the date and most of the eagle's features. The coin exhibits the expected light abrasions from circulation, but maintains solid eye appeal for a territorial gold piece.
