1852 Assay Gold Eagle ($10) S.S. Central America
PCGS XF45
This 1852 Assay $10 was a part of the famous "Ship of Gold" treasure, recovered from the 1857 shipwreck of the S.S. Central America. During the California Gold Rush, trans-continental voyagers like the SSCA served as a vital link in moving newly-mined gold from San Francisco to New York, before the ill-fated vessel succumbed to a hurricane off the Carolina coast.
This XF45 example of a scarce Pioneer SSCA coin displays impressive detail and eye appeal for the grade. The surfaces retain much of their original luster, with honest wear consistent with brief circulation. The distinctive engine-turned reverse pattern, unique to these territorial gold pieces, remains crisp and well-defined. The coin's warm golden color and minimal marks make it an exceptional representative of this historic issue.
