1879-CC Liberty Gold Eagle ($10)
PCGS XF45
The 1879-CC Liberty Head Eagle represents a true Carson City rarity with the lowest mintage of ANY piece of gold struck at the mint -- 1,726 pieces. During this period, the Carson City Mint focused primarily on silver dollar production, making gold coinage a secondary priority. This resulted in extremely limited production numbers for CC-mint gold coins, with the 1879-CC being the scarcest in the series.
This XF45 example displays a pleasing honey-gold patina with subtle hints of copper toning. Despite its time in circulation, the coin retains impressive detail in Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's wing feathers. The CC mintmark is bold and clearly visible, and the surfaces show only modest wear consistent with the grade. The eye appeal is excellent for a circulated Carson City gold piece, with no distracting marks or issues that would detract from its considerable rarity.
