1880-O Morgan Dollar ($1)
NGC MS63
The 1880-O Morgan Dollar comes from a fascinating period in New Orleans Mint history. After being closed during the Civil War and Reconstruction, the New Orleans facility had just reopened in 1879. The 1880-O represents only the second year of Morgan Dollar production at this historic Southern mint, with a mintage of 5.3 million pieces.
This MS63 example certified by NGC displays strong cartwheel luster and crisp striking details throughout. The surfaces show minimal bagmarks for the grade level, and the coin has a lovely silver-white appearance with hints of peripheral toning beginning to form. The eye appeal is excellent, with clean fields and bold device definition.
While not the rarest New Orleans Morgan, the 1880-O is notably more challenging to locate in higher mint state grades compared to many other dates from this mint. This MS63 represents an ideal compromise between condition rarity and value.
