1883 Shield Nickel (5c) Rattler
PCGS
MS64
CAC
The 1883 Shield nickel holds significance as one of the later issues of this historic design, which would soon be replaced by the Liberty Head (or "V") nickel later that same year. While not particularly rare with a mintage of over 1.4 million pieces, high-grade examples like this have become increasingly desirable as type coins representing the first nickel denomination issued by the U.S. Mint.
This MS64 CAC example displays exceptional quality for the grade and is packaged in a lovely original PCGS Rattler. The surfaces show rich, satiny luster with pleasing light silver-gray toning that gives the coin outstanding eye appeal. Both the obverse and reverse are sharply struck, with crisp shield lines and bold stars. The fields are remarkably clean for the grade, showing only minimal marks that are consistent with the MS64 designation.
