1884-S Morgan Dollar ($1)
NGC
AU50
CAC
The 1884-S Morgan dollar stands as one of the most elusive condition rarities in the entire Morgan dollar series. While its mintage of 3.2 million pieces might not suggest extreme rarity, this date is notoriously difficult to locate in high grades. Most examples were immediately released into circulation, with very few preserved in mint state condition.
This CAC-approved AU50 example displays the honest wear and patina that define a properly graded About Uncirculated coin. The surfaces retain significant original mint luster in the protected areas, with light, even wear across the high points. The coin has developed a pleasing silver-gray patina that enhances its original appearance. Despite its time in circulation, the eye appeal remains excellent with well-defined details, particularly in Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers. An exceptional representative of this challenging San Francisco issue.
