1889-O Morgan Dollar ($1)
PCGS
MS65
CAC
Circulating at a pivotal time in U.S. history, the 1889-O Morgan Dollar comes from the renowned New Orleans Mint but is challenging to find in higher grades due to the coinage practices of the time. New Orleans just didn't know how to strike coins very well. Such is life. But more importantly: There were no huge hoards of 89-Os found in the Treasury vaults, so this date has a much different profile than, say, a more common 83-O or 84-O.
This is a particularly special coin, however, because of its look. A true gem, graded MS65 by PCGS and approved by CAC, this isn't a typical "dipped, blast white, poorly struck" O-mint coin. It's got a stunning beautiful, satin-like silvery finish to it that makes it just outstanding. We usually have a simple rule for retail Morgan Dollars: Either blast white or rainbow toned, and nothing in between. This coin got us to break that rule. It's simply magical.
