1916-D Mercury Dime (10c)

The 1916-D Mercury Dime stands as one of the most famous key dates in 20th-century numismatics. With a tiny mintage of just 264,000 pieces - the lowest of the series by far - most examples entered circulation and stayed there until worn nearly smooth. The Denver Mint had just begun striking dimes that year, focusing instead on quarters which were in higher demand.
This G04 example, while well-worn, retains clear design elements and problem-free surfaces - qualities that earned it a CAC sticker. The even, light gray patina suggests natural circulation wear without any post-mint issues. Given how many 1916-D dimes were worn to oblivion or damaged beyond recognition, finding an honest, straight-graded piece like this is increasingly difficult.
For many, the 1916-D represents the holy grail of Mercury Dime collecting. This coin offers an affordable entry point to own this legendary rarity while still maintaining enough detail to be instantly recognizable as the key date it is.
