The 1917 Walking Liberty Half Dollar represents a pivotal year in American history as the United States entered World War I. Philadelphia mint examples like this one were produced in reasonable quantities (8.7 million), but finding specimens that retain significant mint luster after more than a century is increasingly difficult.
This CAC-approved AU58 example sits right at the cusp of uncirculated condition, displaying only the slightest trace of wear on the highest points. The coin exhibits impressive luster that cascades across the surfaces when tilted under light. A pleasing silver-white patina covers both sides, with subtle hints of natural toning developing around the peripheries. The strike is bold, with crisp details throughout Liberty's gown and the eagle's feathers. The eye appeal is exceptional for the grade - this is what we'd call a "slider" that could easily be mistaken for a mint state coin at first glance.
