1938-D Oregon Commemorative Half Dollar (50c)
NGC MS68
The 1938-D Oregon Trail commemorative half dollar was part of the final year of the series, which ran from 1926-1939. The Denver Mint struck 6,006 pieces that year - a relatively low mintage that makes these coins particularly desirable. The series itself celebrated one of the most significant migrations in American history, with over 400,000 settlers traveling the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail between 1841-1869.
This superb MS68 example is a hair away from perfection. It displays pristine surfaces with blazing mint luster. The strike is exceptionally sharp, bringing out all the intricate details of the covered wagon scene and the standing figure on the obverse. The fields are virtually flawless, and the coin has developed a light, even patina that enhances its eye appeal. Finding Oregon Trail commemoratives in MS68 is quite rare - this is certainly among the finest examples known.
