1981 Jefferson Nickel (5c) Error - Struck on Lincoln Cent
ANACS MS64 RD
Error coins always generate excitement, and this 1981-P Jefferson nickel struck on a struck Lincoln cent is a fascinating example of a double denomination error. The Philadelphia Mint accidentally fed a copper cent into a nickel press, creating this dramatic mistake. The smaller diameter and different metal composition of the cent planchet resulted in a unique striking that clearly shows the nickel design on copper.
This MS64 Red specimen boasts pristine surfaces with complete original mint red color. The strike is remarkably bold considering the planchet was not intended for this design. The fields show minimal marks and maintain their lustrous shine. The eye appeal is outstanding, with the copper-red color providing a stunning contrast to the normally silver-colored Jefferson nickel design. Particularly on the reverse, both designs are clearly visible - with Monticello and the Lincoln Memorial both peeking through.
Error coins of this quality rarely survive in such pristine condition, as they were typically discovered only after entering circulation. This example was fortunately saved before any wear could occur, preserving its mint state beauty for future generations to study and enjoy.
