1896 $1 Educational Silver Certificate

F/VF

This 1896 $1 Silver Certificate, Fr. 224, is one of the most artistically significant designs in all of U.S. currency. Known as the "Educational Series," it features an allegorical scene of History instructing Youth, with the Washington Monument visible in the background. The series was short-lived, running only from 1896 to 1897, making these notes particularly scarce.

This Fine-VF example shows moderate but even circulation wear consistent with the grade. The paper retains good body and crispness despite multiple vertical and horizontal folds. The black and red inks remain clear and legible, though somewhat subdued from circulation. The reverse design, featuring portraits in oval frames, maintains strong detail with the green ink showing good contrast. The margins are complete and even, adding to the note's eye appeal despite its circulated state.
