1896 $1 Educational Silver Certificate
PMG 20
This 1896 $1 Silver Certificate, Fr. 224, features one of the most artistic and celebrated designs in U.S. currency history. Known as the "Educational Series," these notes showcase allegorical scenes representing history and progress. The obverse depicts "History Instructing Youth" with the Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol visible in the background. The design represents the pinnacle of 19th-century bank note artistry.
Graded Very Fine 20 by PMG, this note shows expected circulation while maintaining strong eye appeal. The intricate design remains clearly visible with moderate wear consistent with the grade. The paper retains good body despite multiple folds. The blue serial numbers and red Treasury seal remain bright against the black and white design. The reverse displays clear portraits and ornate details, with the green inking still bold despite circulation wear.
The Educational Series notes were only printed for two years before being discontinued, partly due to public criticism of the artistic design. This relatively brief printing period, combined with their status as masterpieces of American currency design, makes these notes particularly desirable in any grade.
