1896 $1 Educational Silver Certificate

PMG 30

This 1896 $1 Silver Certificate, Fr. 224, features one of the most artistic and celebrated designs in all of U.S. currency. Known as the "Educational Series," these notes showcase elaborate allegorical scenes representing history, youth, and progress. The obverse depicts a vignette of History instructing Youth, with the Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol visible in the background.

Graded Very Fine 30 by PMG, this note shows moderate circulation while maintaining strong eye appeal. The intricate black printing remains clear and well-defined against the paper, which has toned to a pleasing light gray. The red Treasury seal retains good color, and the blue serial numbers are crisp. The reverse design, featuring portraits in oval frames with ornate surrounding details, displays equally well with strong green inking. The note exhibits several light folds consistent with the grade, but no serious problems or distractions.

The Educational Series of 1896 represents the pinnacle of American currency design, with this $1 denomination being the most obtainable of the three notes in the series. Its artistic merit and historical significance make it a cornerstone type note for any serious currency collection.
