1896 $2 Educational Silver Certificate
PMG 15
This $2 Silver Certificate, Fr. 248, is one of the most artistically significant notes in American currency history. Known as the "Educational Series" for its allegorical designs, this $2 denomination features the central vignette "Science Presenting Steam and Electricity to Commerce and Manufacture." The series was the brainchild of Bureau of Engraving and Printing Chief Claude M. Johnson, who commissioned prominent American artists to create these elaborate designs. Unfortunately, the series was short-lived due to (unfair!) public criticism of the artistic representations.
Graded Choice Fine 15 by PMG, this note shows evidence of circulation with multiple folds and light soiling consistent with the grade. Despite the handling, the intricate allegorical scene on the obverse remains clear and well-defined. The red Treasury seal retains good color, and the blue serial numbers remain legible. The reverse, featuring portraits of Robert Fulton and Samuel Morse, displays the rich green ink that has held up well through circulation. The paper maintains its structural integrity despite the evident use, offering solid eye appeal for the assigned grade.
